Iran responded to U.S. plans to send troops to the Middle East with a threat to “pursue any aggressor,” and an announcement that it is bringing Russia and China into the volatile situation in the region.
“Be careful, a limited aggression will not remain limited. We will pursue any aggressor,” the head of the Revolutionary Guards, Major General Hossein Salami, said in remarks broadcast on state TV, Reuters reported.
The comments came less than 24 hours after the U.S. said it would send a “moderate” number of troops to the region and additional missile defenses to Saudi Arabia, following last week’s drone strikes on oil facilities in the kingdom. President Trump also slapped additional sanctions on Iran’s national bank Friday in response to the drone strikes.
Iran also announced it will stage a naval drill with Russia and China in international waters, according to Tasnim, a semi-official news agency.
“The joint drill will be held in the north of the Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman,” Tasnim said, according to Bloomberg News. The report said there was “no plan whatsoever to hold such a drill in the Persian Gulf.”
The joint exercise will be the first by Iran, China and Russia in the Indian Ocean, Tasnim reported.
The strikes, which hit Saudi Arabia’s largest oil processing facility and one of its largest oil fields, were claimed by Iran-backed Houthi rebels fighting Saudi Arabia in Yemen, but the U.S. and Saudi Arabia blamed Iran directly.
