Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Sunday Turkey would not allow the implementation of his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump's Middle East peace plan, adding that the plan legitimises Israeli occupation under U.S. auspices, state-run Anadolu news agency said.
"The so-called deal of century which declares Jerusalem the capital of Israel is nothing more than a dream that threatens peace in the region. We will not allow this dream to come true," Erdoğan said in a statement released on the sidelines of the third Conference of the Inter-parliamentary Jerusalem Platform in the Malaysian capital.
On Jan. 29, Trump revealed the long-awaited plan, which promises to keep Jerusalem as Israel's undivided capital, proposes an independent Palestinian state and the recognition of Israeli sovereignty over West Bank settlements.
Underlining that Jerusalem is a red line for Turkey, Erdoğan said Ankara would not let Israel justify its occupation and persecution against Palestinians.
"Turkey will never remain silent on the annexation of Jerusalem or abandon its fellow Palestinian brothers in this fight,” he said.
Turkey under Erdoğan’s Justice and Development Party has had an uneasy relationship with Israel, which has accused the Turkish government of aiding terrorists over its support for the Islamist Palestinian group Hamas.
